World Environment Day 2012 Focuses on Green Economy

GIS - June 04, 2012: The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with other stakeholders is organising a series of activities to mark World Environment Day (WED) 2012.  WED is celebrated on 5 June and the theme for this year is: Green Economy: Does it include you?

WED is one of the principal vehicles used to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action. This event promotes an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues and enables empowerment of people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development.

In the context of WED, a one- day workshop on Green Economy targeting economic operators will be held at La Cannelle, Domaines les Pailles on 5 June. It will be a platform for experience sharing on best practices and sensitising business leaders on the importance of adopting and applying green thinking in decision making. The themes to be discussed will include: sustainable energy and water use, solid waste management practices, sustainable tourism and potentials for adopting green economy by the private sector.

Moreover, a permanent exhibition on Climate Change is scheduled for mid-June at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre. It will comprise interactive stations and videos as well as display panels highlighting the impacts of climate change and illustrating solutions towards new energy technologies.

The public will have the opportunity to enjoy a nature discovery tour at the Blue Bay Marine Park on 16 and 17 June. Sensitisation activities coupled with distribution of resource materials on various environmental issues are on the agenda. 

The programme also includes:

Exhibition and sensitisation on the importance of mangrove at the Vieux Grand Port, Bois des Amourettes, Bambous Virieux and Grand Sable primary schools, and the planting of mangrove seedlings along the coast from Vieux Grand Port to Grand Sable by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University from 5 to 8 June

  • Bulky waste collection and cleaning campaign, together with a sensitisation programme by the Municipality of Quatre-Bornes on 5 June
  • Sensitisation programme and distribution of medicinal and ornamental plants by the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare at the Indira Gandhi Women’s Centre at Rivière du Rempart on 8 June
  • Seminar on “Energy and Water Saving” by Mauritius Alliance of Women and the Municipality of Quatre-Bornes. The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development will make a donation of a rain water harvesting unit to the Mauritius Alliance of Women
